Using the concept of the building as a decorated lantern, the loft-style apartments use exposed double-tee ceilings, timber veneer walls and sliding panel doors to create a unique design statement. Using pre-cut solid composite timber wall systems allowed for extensive off-site pre-fabrication and high-quality veneer finishes throughout.

The former six-storey commercial office building was almost completely vacant and ground floor tenancies were empty when the project was conceived in 2013.

 

At the corner of Symonds Street and karangahape road, the proximity to the university precinct, hospital and adjacent Langham hotel provided the perfect excuse to add a floor and create forty-five, one, two and three-bedroom apartments. The elevated ridge location permits extensive views over Hobson Cemetery and Grafton gulley, right out to the Waitakere ranges and Hauraki gulf.
